Gary Browning

Gary Browning became an ordained minister in 1970.  As a young man, Pastor Gary Browning led a growing Church in Atlanta, GA from 1972 – 1986.  During this time he also led a growing family of five children; four of them boys and one girl.  Their names are Bart, Jason, Chad, LeMoyne, and Reese.

It was in 1987 that a series of wrong choices led to an addiction of alcohol and personal crisis resulting in divorce and loss of influence.  The elders acted in appropriate love and discipline asking Gary Browning to step down as Pastor.

Gary Browning spent a few years wallowing in the mud of self-pity and self-doubt.  However, God in His grace and patience began to restore Gary through the 12-Step program and Pastoral ministry from Covenant Church of Mobile.

It was in 1991 that Pastor Gary Browning came to His senses.  He served as resident manager/chaplain at The Shoulder Alcohol & Drug Treatment Center.

In 1992 he founded the Discovery Group in Mobile,  Alabama – a Christian support ministry for rehabilitation and spiritual healing.  If God could find him and welcome Him back into His family, then Gary wanted to serve others back into God's loving arms and restoration.

In 1994 Gary remarried to Linda McGowin who has served alongside him for the past seventeen years.  Linda has two sons named Keorin McGowin and Jason McGowin.

Pastor Gary Browning continues to conduct recovery meetings at Home of Grace for Women, Wings of Life, Waterfront Rescue Mission, The Shoulder, and Mobile Metro Jail.  Gary’s life mission is to serve God by helping people recover from the addictive, compulsive, and dysfunctional behaviors that keep them from reaching their full potential.

He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion from the University of Mobile, has a Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Cornerstone University with an emphasis in Addictionology, and is a Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor (National Christian Counselors Association.)
